A small tear in the lining of the anus that causes sharp pain during and after passing stool, sometimes with a little bleeding. Many fissures heal with diet changes and medicine.
An anal fissure is a small tear or wound in the thin lining inside the anus. Passing hard stool stretches the lining and causes the injury. It then leads to sharp, cutting pain during and after a bowel movement, and a small amount of bleeding may occur.
Most fissures heal in the early stage with diet and medicine. A high-fibre diet keeps the stool soft and relieves constipation, which is the main cause of a fissure. Medicine that improves blood flow helps the tear heal quickly. Surgery is considered for a long-standing or large fissure.
If bleeding happens repeatedly, or the pain persists even after healing, you should see a doctor again.
