Paraumbilical Hernia (IPOM Mesh Repair)

About this condition

A hernia that forms just above or beside the navel is called an umbilical or paraumbilical hernia. It is seen more often in older people, pregnant women and patients with a history of abdominal surgery. The lump grows slowly and the problem can worsen over time.

Treatment

Placing a mesh through small incisions is known as laparoscopic IPOM mesh repair. A mesh lighter than your own abdominal wall is placed inside the abdomen, which reduces the chance of the lump coming back. Patients recover quickly after the operation.

Common symptoms

A round or egg-shaped lump around the navel
  • The lump sticks out when standing up or bending down
  • Pain, burning or discomfort at the site of the lump
  • Long-standing heaviness in the abdomen and constipation
  • When to see a doctor

    • Seek treatment quickly if the lump turns reddish and swollen or the pain is severe
    • If the lump suddenly grows or does not go back when pressed, it is a sign of strangulation
    • Consult a doctor if another lump appears near the abdomen or anus at the same time

An umbilical hernia carries a higher risk of complications than a groin hernia, so booking an appointment on time matters.
